14/01/15 Playa Maderas (Nicaragua) to Canas (Costa Rica)

Early breakfast then onto the bikes by 8.00am for an 18mile ride, it was a long ride uphill, once we made it over the hill the head wind was pushing hard. It was good exercise I'll give it that. We ended the ride at a school, it is school holidays at this time but there are still plenty of kids using the school yard to play. We loaded back into the bus, our bikes were loaded onto a trailer as they were to go back due to Granada due to border issues and unaccompanied items. We made our way to the border, we filled the customs declarations on the bus, Paul collected these and our passports, once we arrived we left the bus and Paul disappeared to handle all the Nicaraguan departure process, it took about an hour, the girls did yoga while waiting. One of the customs officials came back with Paul, as our name was called they compared our face to the passport, handed it back and we hopped on the bus. One of our group Jackie was a bit worried when they ran out of passports and she was left standing there, it turned out Stuart had a passport stuck to the bottom of his.
We bused to the next check point, the Costa Rica entry, filled in the forms and completed the process ourselves with Paul paying as a group. Departure tax from Nicaragua was 12 dollars, entry to Costa Rice was 3 dollars. Once again on the bus and drove the next 2 1/2hrs to Canas, once here we met our new tour guide for the rest of the trip Roberto. The hotel "Hacienda La Pacifica" was a nice oasis on the Pan Am highway, it had lots of wildlife, lots of Agouta, Deer and Howler Monkeys. We went to the pool to sit and read a while but never swam, dinner was at seven and turned out to be a marathon affair with one person serving a large group of seventeen.
